Synopsis
San Francisco, 1934. The Great Depression has tightened its grip, and every supply line in the city runs through the waterfront. When longshoremen strike for union recognition, a contained labour dispute ignites into a citywide confrontation that stretches democracy to breaking point. As docks shut down and commerce stalls, ordinary men and women are forced into positions of extraordinary power. At the centre stands Australian organiser Harry Bridges, reluctantly elevated into public leadership as events spiral beyond control. Working the shadows is sailor-organiser Nicholas Bordoise, whose quiet coordination across ships, kitchens and meeting halls keeps the movement alive — and makes him a target. Police, politicians, journalists and federal authorities collide as negotiation fails and force replaces dialogue. Over one volatile week, private loyalties fracture, love becomes dangerous, and the cost of visibility turns lethal. Embarcadero chronicles the birth pains of the American middle class — and the human price of collective action.
